Background

HSE has developed this free interactive tool to help site managers think about health and safety issues on their sites. It is aimed at:

• All site operators, including those who are self-employed.
• Site or depot managers who are responsible for health and safety.
• Drivers and workers who may be concerned about the safety of their work site may also find it helpful.

The case studies

The case studies describe various 'unsafe sites' where accidents have taken place. This is followed by the 'safe site' versions showing various improvements that make them safer. All the case studies are fictional, not examples of ideal sites, although they are based on some of the very real dangerous situations that have been found by HSE inspectors. The suggested improvements are not the only, ideal or complete solutions. They are not a blue print for a perfectly safe site.

The case studies can:

• Help you think about the safety of your workplace.
• Help you think about the sites you visit in your work.
• Stimulate discussion about your site such as; how safe is it, could it be improved etc?
• Encourage you to find out more by reading about possible solutions.

Using the fully interactive version

If you have tried to use this version and have experienced problems, please use the standard version (see below). The fully interactive version uses the freely available Macromedia Shockwave plug in.
