Untidy Crossing: Notes

Improved waste management
Fenced off pens have been provided for the storage of waste bins and rubbish.
This improves both the pedestrian's view of the oncoming traffice and the
driver's view of people crossing the road.
No waste markings added
Markings have also been added to encourage people to keep the area free
from rubbish. Management of the waste in these areas is important to encourage
complience.
Pedestrian crossing signs added
Speed limits should be largely self enforcing. Speed limit signs have been
reinforced by narrowing the road at this point, giving the sense of constraint.
This has the added benefit of giving pedestrians a safe place to stand while
waiting to cross. Added speed bumps also ensure that the speed limits are
self enforcing.
Pedestrian barriers added
New signs and road markings have been introduced to make drivers aware of
pedestrians crossing in the area and of the new site speed limit. Speed limit
signs can be reinforced be horizontal and vertical deflections (humps and
chicanes) and by "friction", using buildings and furniture to give
a sense of constraint.
No waste markings added
Pedestrian barriers have been introduced to encourage workers to use crossing
provided. The barriers act as a visual rather than physical restraint to vehicles.
Collapsable bollards added Bollards have been introduced to prevent parking
and storage of materials in areas where this would restrict pedestrian visibility.
They also protect pedestrians on walkways from being struck by reversing vehicles.
Barriers need to be carefully considered so not to impede the loading bays
they are intended to protect.
